The Longest Baseball Game in History... Or Close Enough!

Good Morning!

I hope everyone had a great weekend, we were so lucky to have absolutely gorgeous weather all weekend and Jason didn't work either days which was amazing!

Friday night as I had mentioned we had tickets to the Red Sox vs Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx! We were not sure how it was going to work out because the weather all week said that Friday was going to be raining and we were worried the game would be rained out. By the time Friday rolled around it seemed really questionable but by the time we were leaving it was likely we would at least not be rained on!

Jason got home early and we headed to the Bronx, it was really great that we got to leave early because the trains weren't horrifically packed and we managed to get there early enough to hit up the Dug Out for a beers before the game. Years ago when we went to a Yankees vs Red Sox game we stopped there first as well. The area where Yankee Stadium is, well lets just say its probably not what you would expect and there isn't a ton of bars or anything.. this place is extremely large and popular! Jason went on about the $4.00 beers which here is a good deal, but he neglected to tell me it was PBR.. call me a beer snob, but seriously? Gross!

When we first arrived there was a good mix of Yankees and Red Sox fans but naturally the Yankees fans poured in. Obviously the Yankees and Red Sox are huge rivals but I will say the trash talk was kept to a minimum.. maybe in part because the Yankees has lost the night before to the Blue Jays. There were a bunch of us with tickets to the game but sadly as always with work the guys never really know how things will go and its hard to plan things in advance. 4 tickets went wasted and Josh worked later than Jason so we didn't venture there together. There ended up being 6 of us in total though!

We met at the Dug Out for drinks and then headed over to the stadium.

Yankee Stadium is a super nice stadium, I have always enjoyed going to games there and wish that we were able to make it there more! We were all pretty pumped that the weather turned around in our favor and shockingly the stadium wasn't all that full so we managed to sit together. Tanya snapped this great picture of us and was lovely enough to share it with me!

Jason, god love his devotion to all New England teams! He wore his red sweater proud and rooted loudly for the Red Sox pretty much the entire game!

As you can see the sky cleared and we couldn't have been happier. It wasn't all that cold either which was really nice because as you can see it is an outdoor stadium!

The game started off really good, we had the cutest little Red Sox fans sitting in front of us, there was 3 young boys who were probably around 7 and Jason was yelling away and they totally joined in thinking it was great! Every time a play went really well for the Red Sox they kept saying "I can feel us winning already", it was absolutely hilarious!

So how long does a usual baseball game run? It goes 9 innings but length I guess varies.. so we learned! The game went into overtime and eventually people started to leave, so we all moved way down closer to the field. Then the game continued... on and on... At midnight I decided to get a hot chocolate. Tanya and I were freezing cold, it was only us and the McMann's left, the other couple bailed early.

Guys the game would not end! The next picture is not the best quality but I really wanted you to see the time on the clock!

2:05am!!! Guys we were still there at 2:05 am!!! The game ended up running 19 innings and 7 hours long! Although it was not the longest MLB game in history  (The longest game in major league baseball history was a 25-inning affair on May 8, 1984 when the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-6. The game lasted 8 hours and 6 minutes according to Google) it was the longest game in history between the Yankees and Red Sox in regards to actual time played!

The Red Sox finally won! Jason was obviously pretty happy about that and it was time to go home. We were obviously quite restless by this point and all dreading the long subway ride home! Not to mention we were all starving and it was almost 3am so there wasn't exactly a lot of places to stop and grab a snack! Poor Jason was absolutely exhausted and I think the traveling home hurt him the worst. Because most of the crowd gave up long before the game was over the subway wasn't packed like it could have been that's for sure, I can imagine some of you would still be shocked at the amount of people out at that time. The ride back to the 33rd stop seemed to go a lot faster then I had anticipated and then we hopped on the PATH back to Jersey city. By this point Jason was basically delirious and dragging ass!

We didn't get in until almost 4am and we were absolutely exhausted.. needless to say Jason's plan of going to work on Saturday didn't happen.

Overall the game was really good, we had discussed getting tickets to Sunday's game but after spending so much time there Friday night we decided against it. The Red Sox played the Yankees again on Saturday and lost again.. in case you were wondering!!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! If you are ever in New York and have a chance to catch a game at Yankee Stadium I would highly recommend it, and although it may not be high on your list if its a nice day I would highly recommend the Mets Stadium as well. Tanya and I saw a game there when we lived in New York before and it was a fantastic day! Again an open stadium though so make sure its a nice day!!
