Products I am Loving! 02.10.14

Good Morning,

We are still in the the wake of Christmas or so I would like to think and therefore I have some new products that I've been using that I thought I would share with you guys. As you know I get my monthly Birchbox which I love and I got a bunch of stuff for Christmas and then when I run out of stuff I sometimes try new stuff so every couple of months I run into a bunch of products, or at least a few that I love and like to share them with you guys. These are what I am loving as of lately.

The Balm Cindy-Lou Manizer

I got this product in a Birchbox a couple of months ago and truth be told at first I didn't really love it. It has such a strong gold sheen to it that it always looks sparkly and I am just not into that. I put it in my makeup bag and would look at it on occasion but never really used it. One day I was just putting on minimal makeup and thought I would use this to brighten up my cheeks a little.. turns out I absolutely love it. I generally only use this on minimal make up days because it will serve a dual purpose as blush and highlighter. I really like it, its really pigmented so a little goes a long way! I like all the Balm products I have tried and this one is no exception.

The Body Shop Satsuma Body Polish

I have mixed feelings about sharing this one with you guys because it is truly bittersweet. I didn't know how I would feel about a body scrub when I got this one for Christmas, but I definitely love the satsuma scent so I was excited to use it. Turns out I absolutely LOVE this body scrub but for the size pictured above (200ml/ 6.75 FL OZ) is $20.00! Maybe some people are happy to spend that much on a body wash but let me tell you I am not! I suppose I could wait until they go on sale though, because I definitely want to buy more! 

This product is great, the smell lingers on your body and in your bathroom! I can go for a shower and than go in the bathroom 45 minutes later and still smell the satsuma! Naturally these come in all different scents so if you happen to see a sale at The Body Shop or are fine to spend the much money on body wash then go buy some!! Right now!!!

Blank Canvas Cosmetics 6 Contour/Highlight Palette

One day I was watching an Aubrey Kinch makeup tutorial and I saw that she was using this palette and I was intrigued! She raved about how great it was which was evident as she had hit pan on pretty much every pot! I started looking into it and when I discovered the whole palette was priced at $14.85 I wanted it. Here's the catch, the company is based in Ireland and therefore you are going to pay a small fortune for shipping. Tanya decided that she was going to order the palette as well so it worked out great because we split the shipping and the palette still worked out to be only $20.00 which is FANTASTIC! 

I pretty much use the entire palette all year long. I use the palette every single day and with the range of colors I get use out of it when I am pale in the winter and tanned in the summer. There is a HD powder is great for setting your under eye concealer if you are looking for a bright under eye. I use the lighter of the two yellow powders as an overall face powder because my Sephora one is too dark for me right now (pathetic I know). I use the two lighter contour colors to contour in the summer and when I am a little darker I will use to two darkest color. I know I will run out of the middle shade of brown first which sucks because it is my PERFECT bronze shade with no shimmer! 

I cannot rave about this palette anymore, I will definitely be purchasing more from this website. They literally have everything, and I am anxious to try their brushes. I know you have to pay for shipping but all of this is so worth it. You can check them out HERE.

Philosophy Coconut Frosting 3 in 1 Shampoo, Body Wash & Bubble Bath

I love everything Philosophy as you may well know if you have been reading this blog for awhile so I was really excited when Jason bought me this for Christmas. He did good because I also love everything coconut. I only use this as bubble bath and I absolutely love it! This stuff gives sooooooooo many bubbles with the little bit of product and it smells AMAZING! Same as the satsuma body scrub the smell lingers on your body and in the bathroom forever! I don't really know what else to say about this stuff, I love it.. go buy it! I think Philosophy products can tend to be a little pricey but I feel this is really totally reasonably priced at $18.00 for this giant bottle!!

You can purchase this at Ulta, Sephora and I have found it at Kohl's as well. 

Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer

I have sensitive skin and so I have to be really careful about what I use on my face or it will not only break out but I will get a rash and what not.. none of it is pleasant. Anything that is specifically for sensitive skin is right up my alley! I was using the Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer and loved it but I felt that because during the winter months I tend to get extremely dry that I needed something a little more heavy duty. When we were home at Thanksgiving I was touring around Target (because obviously) and was looking for a moisturizer for winter when I came across this. It was on sale and Aveeno is such a great brand that I thought why not give it a try. 

I really love this stuff, it smells really good, its super thick and moisturizing but not at all greasy! I use this morning, noon (on no makeup days, because you can never have too much moisture in the winter) and night. In the morning I will use this before putting on my makeup and it makes my skin the perfect canvas to apply makeup. 

I think its reasonably priced, its a little more than your regular everyday drugstore moisturizer but significantly cheaper than a high end one. It can be purchased at Target for $14.00.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Winter Dream Tea

You probably remember from one of my recent High Five for Friday posts that Tanya and I were in the city and got Winter Dream Lattes at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.. it was incredible! Tanya purchased the tea that day and then decided she loved it so much she ordered some of their stuff online. She gave me some of the tea and although I tried to recreate the latte at home unsuccessfully I decided I really liked the tea a lot all on its own. The tea itself is kind of spice like but not nearly as strong as a chai or anything like that. Its advertised as "cinnamon spice and everything nice" which I think is extremely accurate. I really love this tea. 

Tanya also purchased their strawberry cream green tea and shared that as well (so nice!) and it too is absolutely amazing. Often times I find a green tea will be said to have a certain flavor and often its nothing like you would expect but these are exactly as described. If you are in the market for some tea I would highly recommend checking these out. If you cant get to a store you can purchase them online!

American Sniper By Chris Kyle: Book Review

Listen guys we might as well establish something here, for awhile there are going to be a lot of book reviews, if you don't want to read them I totally respect that but I am reading a lot as you can tell and I feel the need to share. I am trying to change up the genre of the books that I am reading to keep it interesting around here but there are going to be book reviews here and there, I'm sorry if its not your thing.

As you know reviews of the movie American Sniper are absolutely everywhere, not to mention the horrific story of how Chris Kyle's life was taken far too soon. I see it on the cover of every magazine in the supermarket, its on every entertainment show and naturally curiosity got the best of me and when Jason and I were at Target the other night I bought the book. I know the movie is the hot topic but I prefer to read the book first on most accounts and having thought about that the other day I was quite amused yesterday to wake up and find Helene over at Helene in Between had wrote THIS post. She makes some really good points, I like to read the book because I want to decide what the characters look like, see the whole picture in my head exactly as I think it is because of what I have read. Now obviously I could only do that so much with this book as I have seen Chris Kyle and his wife Taya's face everywhere.

The book in my opinion is ALWAYS better than the book, always.. so I knew I had to read this book before I saw the movie, and I am anticipating the movie to be epic.

I truly couldn't put this book down, I know there are mixed reviews as to why Chris Kyle wrote this book but regardless I do believe his story deserved to be told and as he said it, why better to tell it than he who lived it. 

I know there are mixed reviews about this book, there is a lot of talk about Chris Kyle glamorizing war and although I respect everyone's opinion on what they read I honestly didn't see it that way. Here's the thing, I feel like in order for me to judge his truth I would have had to live it, I get that he comes across cold but I find it hard to believe you wouldn't having seen the things he has seen. When acts of terrorism happen we are angry, we are sad that the world we live in leaves us with worries such as this but none the less that is the world we live in. It makes us angry and sad. Chris Kelly saw terrorism everyday for 8+ years, he walked the streets with his fellow American's everyday in a place where they were target, literally with bounty's on their head. Wouldn't that make you a little biased? a little cold?

This book was hard to read, the gratefulness we have for the men and women who serve our country in those terrible awful places just doesn't seem like enough. They truly risk their lives and sadly sometimes lose them all for the greater good of us and our daily lives. 

I felt horrific sadness reading this book all the while knowing that this man served his country, had many close calls, came home struggling to find a balance between what he had been through and what his life had been to being home in a completely different world trying to find normalcy in a life that didn't make sense to him anymore had died in such a horrific way. This man served his country in the most courageous way and came home looking for a way to serve his country while still being a father and a husband and he died at the hands of a fellow veteran. It makes my heart ache. 

Even if you've seen the movie, read the book. 

I was sad for the book to end when I was done, and although I have seen the movie a couple of times I went out and bought Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. Marcus and Chris were both SEALs and Marcus was mentioned in the book, reminding me of my love for the movie and how I hadn't read the book. So stayed tuned for a review on that!

High Five for Friday 02.06.15

Hi guys,

I'm not going to lie I have the horrific winter blues over here, that combined with home sickness has not made for the most epic week. I swear I hate nothing worse than winter, I despise it in fact. I remember last year being at home, Jason was in Alaska and it started to snow. I went outside and sat on the front steps and just smelled the snow, it was amazing. By the next day it was gone and I was good with the whole thing. Why cant winter work like that every where? I don't get loving winter, I think the worse thing in the world is being cold and I generally am anyways so winter does not help! Can is just be spring?

Anyways enough complaining. Its been a really quiet week here because its been super cold, the weather is pretty crappy, not to mention my partner in crime is home visiting family in Canada! I don't know why I didn't make my way home for a week where its 50 degrees everyday.. that's a thought for another day though.

I did manage to pull together 5 things from this week and here I am to share!

1. THE PATRIOTS WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!
Obviously this was the best part of the week. We waited all day (which seemed like forever) for the game and it was a nail biter. In the end we won and it was absolutely FANTASTIC! I have been loving all the hype all week, I watched the Patriots celebration parade in Boston this week and the guys have been on a bunch of different talk shows and late night, plus instagram has been flooded with all kinds of pictures and videos.. its been fantastic! Time to rest of up for next season boys!!

2. Target is gearing up for Spring!

This is a bit of a tease I won't lie. I made my way to Target on Wednesday and the sidewalks were icy and slushy and basically a freakin' mess and I walk into Target and there is all their Spring clothing. I wont lie it gives me hope, they are bringing out Spring clothing so it must be coming, not to mention the fact that those bright colors just made me happy. I was tempted to buy something just to hang it in my closet so I could look at it. On that note all my Spring/Summer clothes are at home right now because between Jason (YES JASON) and I we have way too many clothes to fit in the tiny closet here so we switch them out according to season, anyways I took note of my winter wardrobe and its pretty drab. All black, grey, navy blue.. I need to spice things up a little. geesh! 

3. Books, Books and more Books!

I have been reading up a storm if you can tell from all the book reviews around here. I love to read and this is the perfect time of year to do a lot of that because there is a lot more in door time. I have been flying through books and last week I decided to pick up American Sniper because I had heard so much about the movie, I finished that one (stay tuned for a book review, naturally) and grabbed Lone Survivor at Target when I was there this week. I am really interested in these war books and a look at things from the inside. So far and I am really enjoying Lone Survivor as well. Sometimes all you need is a cup of tea and a good book!

4. Trivia Crack. 

Judge if you will but honestly I don't play any games on my phone, any games online and I don't have facebook for any of those games. So last week when I was watching Essie Button's January favorites video and she mentioned this app she had called Trivia Crack that she was loving I thought I would check it out. I'm not going to lie I am addicted, I made my Mom get it so I had someone else to play against. I like anything that causes you to think a little extra and this game is fantastic. You can find it at the App store for free if you want to give it a whirl, or you can check it out HERE.

5. Geek Squad

OK this one may seem a little lame but it was a lifesaver for me this week. We purchased our computer through Best Buy years ago and we ended up getting the extended warranty with Geek Squad, I have to say because our computer is junk we have definitely used it and continued to renew it as time has gone on. Anyways I have been having problems with my blog, I thought I had a virus or something and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. I have been running virus scans and Googling anything and everything to see how to fix it and getting no where. I finally decided to go on the Geek Squad website yesterday and see if they could help. It was the best decision I could have made, they fixed it in less than an hour and I didn't have take it in and keep it for days. They logged into my computer and I watched them do everything and they fixed it all. They answered all my questions and it was all part of our plan so I didn't pay a cent! I couldn't be happier with the results.

So that was my week, nothing exciting but there you have it. We are going out to dinner tonight which I am really excited for, I just want out of the apartment and not to have to cook. Its the little things people.

Danger Stalks the Land, Alaskan Tales of Death & Survival by Larry Kanuit: Book Review

Hi Guys!

So as you can tell yet ANOTHER book review but its totally different than the ones I have been recently posting. I have been on a reading tangent as you all know but I was looking for something a little different and I really didn't have anything on my Nook that was sparking my interest so I grabbed what was on the shelf.

While we were in Alaska Jason finally started reading which made my heart swoon. I love to read and always have, so do my parents so I never understand when people say that they don't read. I know Jason reads a lot at work but its just not the same, I tried for years and got no where and then when we were in Alaska he was so into everything Alaska (and still is) that I bought him a bunch of Alaska books and he would read every night in bed. I have continued to buy Alaska books every Christmas in hopes that his reading will continue. It has sadly trailed off in the last year but I always make sure there are Alaska books around and on hand so if the mood ever strikes he will have no excuses. The mood hasn't been right apparently and the books were looking neglected so I decided to read it.

I need to disclose though a small fun fact before I continue.. since I started reading this book I kept thinking it sounded familiar and I may have already read it. I asked Jason if he remembered me reading it and he said I probably did but he wasn't 100%. Generally I go through so many books he has no idea what I am reading. So I read along anyways almost sure that I had read it once before and when I went to log it into my 'read' section on Good Reads I discovered I have indeed read it, August 2013 I believe. HA!

None the less I thought I would stop in and share it with you anyways!!

The author is actually a friend of a guy I worked with in Alaska which is how I came to purchase the book in the first place and it is extremely well written. The book is a series of short stories written by Larry but told through most often the survivors!

These stories range from plane crash stories, bear encounters, the dangers of gun, being lost in the woods and so on. The range over MANY MANY years and all over the state. I enjoyed the book the first time I'm sure, don't take my not remembering it as a reflection on the book! I enjoyed it this time too!

This book isn't for everyone, in fact its probably for a certain type of person only but if you have an interest in Alaska, the outdoors or stories of survival I think you would really enjoy this!

I think I might read another Alaska book after this because its sitting on the shelf, so stay tuned for that!

If We Were Having Tea....

Good Afternoon,

Honestly all I have for you guys in my drafts are book reviews because I have been reading up a storm! I finished another book yesterday and started another one today so I feel like that's all I have going right now! If it makes you feel better my February Birchbox will be here soon and Tanya and I are going to Live with Michael and Kelly on the 11th so I will have something else to talk about!

I'm sorry guys I am in such a winter funk.. I despise the cold and snow and right now we have both and I am not happy about it. To me there is absolutely nothing good about winter besides when its gone and according to that stupid ground hog it wont be for another 6 weeks! So basically that's why you are getting a lot of book reviews because I haven't tried many new products and there isn't much going on because its winter, and winter is bullshit!

Having said that I am drinking a lot of tea, and I was sitting around today thinking of all the things I might tell you if we were having tea together...

If we were having tea... I would definitely ask you if you watched the Superbowl and tell you again how excited I am that the Patriots won. I would also encourage you to watch THIS hilarious video (that has curse words, warning in case that bothers you.)

If we were having tea... I would tell you that tea doesn't compare to coffee and that I feel stupid to not be drinking coffee for no good reason and that I am going to start drinking it again. I might actually get up and order another drink.. one that isn't tea... right then and there. I love coffee and one cup a day is not bad for you!

If we were having tea... I would tell you that I just finished reading American Sniper and I absolutely loved it and now really cant wait for the movie. Jason says he wants to read the book before we see the movie but he never reads and I'm not waiting to see the movie.

If we were having tea... without a doubt I would bitch about winter and how I cant wait for it to be over.

If we were having tea... I would also tell you that I am sick of New Jersey and want to go home.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that we had to decline an invitation to a wedding next month because of Jason's work schedule but I really wanted to go. I wanted a break from this place and I wanted to go to Texas really bad!

If we were having tea... I would tell you that I might be getting a head cold which would explain why I have had a headache for almost a week.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that I need to get it together and get some blog posts planned and written, maybe some new recipes and stuff because I am slacking and it shows. I'm blaming winter though, it screws up everything.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that Jason finally won the Christmas tree battle and it came down on Sunday and the apartment looks sooo empty.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that I have been feeding the squirrels lately and now them come by every single day and sit out there on the balcony begging. Little creepers. When I told Jason I was feeding them he ever so seriously said "Ok but don't let them in because they will destroy the place" as though he actually thought I might let them in. HA!

If we were having tea... I would ask you whats going on with you?

If we were having tea... I would if you've been to Target lately and seen all their new Spring stuff out. Its such a tease. Also all of their handbags are on sale for 50% off in case you were wondering.

If we were having tea... it would inevitably end too soon and we would part ways and go about our day!

I am off to get thing ready for dinner and continue to read. I so enjoyed American Sniper that I decided to go and purchase Lone Survivor although I have already watched that movie a few times but I loved it. I go through phases of reading and how much but lately that's all I want to do, day and night!

Where She Went By Gayle Forman: Book Review

That's right, I got the second book! Remember HERE where I reviewed the first book, If I Stay and at the time I had no realized that it was a two part book? Well I checked Target for the next part and nothing and I didn't really want to order it online and pay the shipping for one book so I was naturally not a happy camper! Well last week Jason and I were at BJs and when I went to walk by the book table I decided to just take a look and there it was, naturally I had to get it. Sadly I was already reading another book but I couldn't wait to start this one.

I must laugh as above it says "chance brings them together".. not quite! I absolutely loved this book, it was so raw and real! The first book was told by Mia, it was her story and her life from her perspective and this book was told by Adam. His story was fantastic, so well written! 

This book definitely answers everything you were left wondering when I finished the first book, it told of the horrible years that followed this unimaginable accident and how it affected Mia and Adam's lives, that they were leading separately. It was extremely interesting to see how their lives unfolded and how they were effected by their loss of a family, as well as each other.

It seemed unlikely that their paths would cross and yet unlikely that they wouldn't. I didn't expect exactly how they would but it lead to an amazing nights full of tears, answers, closure and ultimately new beginnings.

I am a sucker for happy endings but I must say in reading both books I didn't hope the book ended with Mia and Adam rekindling their one of a kind romance, I hoped for peace for both them to be able to move on, where ever life was going to take them.

If you are like me and only read series when all the books are out, grab this one! The books were cheap to buy and they were fantastic books! I can see myself read these again!

PATRIOTS WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!!! 2015

Hello!!!

Did y'all watch the Superbowl? If not you missed out and your life will never be the same! I am a Patriots fan so that may make me a little biased.

Yesterday seemed so long, Jason and I went out to the store in the morning and got a few things, Jason insisted we finally take down the Christmas tree and I begrudgingly agreed! Mostly we were trying to pass the day waiting for the game. Jason made a ton of snacks, wings, buffalo chicken dip, a huge pot of chili (that we never got to and will be having for dinner tonight) and so on. We decided to stay home and watch the game because Jason didn't want to be around a bunch of negative nelly's while the game was going on.

I have to say not only did I want the Patriots to win because they are my team but I wanted to see them beat those arrogant Seattle bastards so bad! I will say if you are a Seattle fan you should probably just stop reading right now because that is about the nicest thing I will say about them! I feel the Seattle players are all nasty and arrogant and they are the LAST people I wanted to see win! However they brought their defense and screwed the Patriots run game, it was small play after small play and at the end of the game I felt if we didn't make a major play we may not be walking away champs. Welcome into the picture MALCOM BUTLER!!!!!! ROOKIE!!!!!! FIRST CAREER INTERCEPTION!!!!! No kidding Jason and I flew off the couch SCREAMING! Although the interception was exactly what we needed they had to get the ball out of the end zone without interception preventing a safety and field goal by Seattle and due to a penalty on Seattle's part they did it! AMAZING!!!!!!

The game was awesome, I would have loved to see it be a blowout to save myself some gray hair but whatever, WE WON!!! We will be purchasing some Superbowl winners apparel this week let me tell you!!!

I'm not sure what is better, Sherman's face above when the interception happened or Brady's jumping up and down with excitement! I seriously hate that guy and his big mouth! What do you have to say now buddy?

ANYWAYS!

It is an absolutely MISERABLE day here today, I know you are all getting a lot of snow but we are getting a huge wintery mix. This morning around 2am the wind was blowing like crazy and it was snowing, a straight up blizzard was happening outside. When Jason went to work around 6am it was pouring rain which has since turned to freezing rain and we are looking to get a whole bunch of that sadly. Its going to be quite a miserable day, and tomorrow isn't looking to be much better. 

I also wanted to apologize for my absence last week Thursday and Friday, for some reason I had the most terrible headache and there was nothing I could do to get rid of it! Sitting on the computer just made it worse, truth be told Thursday it felt like everything made it worse. So I missed High Five for Friday but that will commence this coming Friday!!

There really isn't much more going on to report, what better news could you possibly need besides the Patriots winning the Superbowl anyways?
